Absolute Dance Company, Auburn, $4,250 – Core Dance Experience brings dance education and performance to the Finger Lakes. Jon Lehrer teaches master classes throughout the US & the world. He and his dance company, Lehrer Dance, will host a master class on the Lehrer technique, choreograph a new work, and perform with his company this May at Cayuga Community College. Auburn Downtown Partnership, $2,600 – Downtown Auburn Summer Concert Series is a six week, outdoor, Wednesday night summer concert series featuring, among others, the Mario DeSantis Orchestra on July 16 performing 30 new arrangements of big band, swing, jazz, and dance selections. Auburn Players Community Theatre, $3,560 – 2008 Theatre Performances season has something for every taste, including among others – All My Sons by Arthur Miller; Laughter on the 23rd Floor, by Neil Simon; the summer musical, Pajama Game; the 5th Annual Youth theatre production in August, and a Local Playwright Festival in September featuring original short plays. Auburn Public Theater, $4,500 – Marolio's Children's Summer Programming. Mario Soto, an equity actor trained at the Boston Conservatory of Music, will lead a 4-week children's theater workshop, which will explore improvisation, theater games, and pantomime along with building concrete skills of teamwork, communication, and set creation. Aurora Free Library, $1,870 – Family Art Series. This project involves an Irish cultural journey of dance, music, and stories with Deirdre McCarthy; the Syracuse Opera Ensembles will perform Heroes and Villains; Brien Engle will mesmerize all with his glass harp; and Daniel Kirk, writer & Illustrator will describe the creative process. Frontenac Historical Society & Museum, Union Springs, $3,615 – Festival at the Frontenac. From May through September, 5 great concerts can be heard at the Historical Society. Offerings include the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, Cobblestone Crossing (folk), Smugtown Stompers (blues & ragtime), the Geneva Convention (barbershop quartet), and John Rossbach and Chestnut Grove (bluegrass). Hazard Library Association, Poplar Ridge, $1,985 - Catch the Music Bug. This summer enjoy music by folk singer Cathy McGrath, tall tales from the Wild West with Brian Coughlin, presentation with multi-instrumentalist (dulcimer, yang quin, and banjo) Dan Dougan, and storytelling with professional actor, Chris Holder. Port Byron Library, $965 – Tales for Young & Old. The library, a first time applicant, will present Diane Edgecomb and Insect Comedy, an interactive story that brings to life the insect world and develops a deeper appreciation of nature. This holiday season, the audience will don costumes for the Bells & Motley interactive performance: Wassail!, holiday concert and musical pageant. Contact Cathy Applebee at 315.776.5731.
Village of Cayuga, $3,720 – Waterfront Art & Music Series. The Village of Cayuga, a first time applicant, will host Cayuga artist Tom Hussey, who will teach an all day plein air painting workshop in June and Susan Harris in a 2-day plein air photography workshop. Concerts in the park will begin in May with Larry Hoyt, culminating in an August singer – songwriter event featuring several bands, such as Blue Sky Mission Club, performing their original works. Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival, Canandaigua, $4,500 – World Class Chamber Music. A world class concert series runs from February until the end of August. Artists include Jon Nakamatsu, gold medalist of the 10th Van Cliburn Competition, who will perform with Juliana Atnayde, RPO's concert master, on August 29. Other featured artists include composer and pianist Noam Sivan and Maya Hartman performing a piano duo - Stravinsky's Rite of Spring; the Amelia Trio, and the Corigliano Quartet will also perform. Finger Lakes Bronze, Geneva, $3,000 – Ringing in the Finger Lakes with the F L Bronze. This group will hold concerts throughout the five county Finger Lakes area, including traditional Christmas fare at the Smith Opera House, directed by Judith Treisback; a workshop and concert with Michele Sharik, a professional handbell solo and ensemble artist from the San Francisco Bay area; and a handbell festival with handbell choirs from around the Northeast. Geneva Theatre Guild, $3,700 – Summer Musical, Little Shop of Horrors. GTG has an extensive performance schedule including a dinner theater this winter at the Ramada Inn: 2 musicals in July at the Smith Opera House: Little Shop of Horrors and a Youth Theater Musical, Aladdin; the Curvin Players in July & August (free) held at playgrounds and nursing homes, Graceland and Asleep on the Wind in September, and a murder mystery in November. Ontario County Arts Council, Canandaigua, $3,000 – A Kaleidoscope of Arts is a three part series with Sunday concerts from January until April 20 including the Finger Lakes Saxophone Quartet and the Hochstein String Quartet; an original play about American painter Emily Carr, written and performed by Kathy Morris; and a 3-day felting workshop with fiber artist Sara Burnett. St. Peter's Community Arts Academy, Geneva, $2,000 - St. Peter's Community Arts Academy Concert Series presents Heart Strings, a Valentines Concert was given by Julianna Methvan, violinist with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and Troy Slocum, piano; Just "B" Natural in April will feature classical art songs from Schubert & Hahn, as well as jazz standards; St. Peter's choir will perform the annual Spring Sing June 13, followed by a chicken barbeque; and the Sounds of Christmas will feature traditional choral selections. Seeking Common Ground, Crystal Beach, $1,500 – The Magic of Clay. Helene Oldweiler, a well known local potter, will teach a series of clay workshops at FLCC in April. This 6-week course is suitable to all levels of experience as the student will be able to work closely with Helene. Work on the potter’s wheel will be the focus. Cadence Whittier/Hobart & William Smith Colleges, Geneva, $4,000 – Space: Contemporary Choreographers in Concert. Cadence Whittier, a dance professor at HWS, will hold a series of workshops throughout the summer that will result in an October dance concert at the Smith Opera House. Seven professional choreographer/dancers will create & perform their works revolving around the theme people, the human spirit, and space effect each other. Village of Manchester, $2,500 – Summer Concert Series at the Manchester Bandstand. This outdoor concert series will bring quality musical groups to the recently renovated bandstand in Manchester/Shortsville. The bands include Paulsen, Baker, and Garvey; Don Newcomb & Rawhide; the Music Makers; Grupo Calle Uno, and the ever popular Dady Brothers. Concerts are Wednesday nights in July and are free. Wood Library, Canandaigua, $3,990 – In Touch with the Arts 2008: Exploring Tactile Arts. This project will explore the very different materials of art – clay, ink, paper, fabric, sand, wax, and more. 13 workshops and programs from March through December will include origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding; funky junk, art from recycled materials; recording studio experience (held at FLCC); and comic book creation, and more. Seneca County Arts Council, Seneca Falls, $750 – 2008 Workshop Series will provide professional instruction in such disciplines as Portrait drawing and Porchoir Painting (a printmaking process similar to silkscreen) both with Roberta Nelson. Beverly Lombardo will teach Springtime in Pastels, and Michael Czarneki lead a memoir writing workshop open to all levels of writing experience. Contact the Council at 315.730.8892.
Seneca Falls Library, $3,650 – Pursuit of Happiness: Art & Music in the Library. This project offers a varied arts program throughout the year ranging from classical piano recitals on their grand piano, Celtic music for St. Pat's day, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Wind Quintet, Jazz, and a choral performance with the Seneca Singers. Some other events are: Pat Schwartz Roth will read her poetry for poetry month and the Merry-Go-Round Youth Summer Playhouse will perform July 17. Seneca Museum of Waterways & Industry, Seneca Falls, $3,500 – Music for all Ages. This family centered concert series will include such artists as Brien Engle and his water harp in May; John Rossbach and Andy van Norstrand in June performing traditional American folk music; the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Brass Quintet for classical music month in September; Gretchen Murray Sepik will perform as Susan B. Canaltown Chorale, Ontario, $1,000 - 28th Annual Concert Series. Wayne County's only adult chorale group will bring a lively, varied concert series to rural Palmyra and Walworth. A traditional classical concert in March will be followed by a pops Broadway concert in June. The series will be topped off with 2 family Christmas concerts, with audience participation encouraged. Church of Christ of Newark, $2,000 - Our Year of Jubilee A Cappella Workshops & Concert celebrated fifty years of service in Wayne County this past January with a series of workshops and an A Cappella concert of gospel music. This project included the Greene Family, the Exciting Enchanters, the Johnson Singers, Sons of Harmony, and Ronald Walker and the Sons of Praise. Contact Rev. Earl Greene at 315.331.2454.
Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Newark, $4,000 – FLSO 2008 Concert Series will bring a series of high quality events to Ontario and Wayne counties beginning with a Spring Concerto with a student concerto competition. The summer pop series will be held outdoors at Sodus Bay Lighthouse, Geneva Lakeshore Park, and Casey Park, Ontario. The Nutcracker in collaboration with the Ithaca Ballet this holiday season will follow their traditional Fall Concert in October. Contact Mary Smith at 315.331.6717; flso.org.
Ontario Public Library, Ontario, $1,200 – Arts for You @ the Library. The Irish group, Cuisle Mo Chroi, will perform four part harmony with the aid of the Irish harp, a wooden flute, and penny whistle. A polymer clay jewelry workshop with Mary Beth Dolan will explore designs of Ancient Egypt; participants will fashion their own jewelry. Sodus Bay Historical Society, $4,500 – Sodus Bay Lighthouse Free Concerts in the Park is a series of 10 top notch musical groups will perform by the lake from July 4th through Labor Day. Kicking off the season will be Gap Mangione and his big band, followed by the Dady Brothers, Bourbon Street Jazz Band. Later in the summer you can dance to Li'l Anne and the Hot Cayenne, and Dick Stacey and the Rhythm Aces, and many others. Concerts are free as well as admission to the lighthouse on concert days. Wayne County Council for the Arts, Newark, $2,600 – Accessible Art for All. This series of high quality, affordable, multidisciplinary art classes will begin with Wayne Williams’ adult figure drawing & adult sculpture (with a live model). There will be a series of children's art classes with Shelly DeRenzo, February through June, an adult writing class with Cynthia Henry, as well as a six week adult water color class in May with Chris Fayad. Yates County
Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Penn Yan, $2,000 – Finger Lakes Concert Series offers an extensive classical music concert series beginning in February with a winter fundraiser concert and continuing throughout the late spring and summer. Hunt Country Vineyards and Keuka College provide a beautiful backdrop for many of these concerts. In addition, educational children's concerts will be held at Camp Cory, Camp Good Days & Special Times, and at local schools, allowing children to see and hear instruments up close. hlevant@rochester.rr.com; fingerlakes-music.org.
Rochester Folk Art Guild, Middlesex, $4,500 – Expanding Horizons. Ensemble Resonance, the Guild's own trio of professional musicians (flute, bassoon, and piano) will perform this summer, featuring music from around the world with demonstrations on improvising techniques. This summer teens can register for 10, day-long pottery classes of intensive instruction taught by Claire Willis. Steve Merritt, a well known Rochester potter, will teach a Japanese pottery workshop in August, and Guild member, Sara Burnett, will hold a 3 day Shibori (Japanese dyeing technique) and vegetable dyeing workshop.
